Description: This expressive watercolor and gouache landscape by Pierre Neveu captures a quintessential Provençal hillside scene, complete with sunlit stone houses, terracotta rooftops, and lush Mediterranean greenery. Although not inscribed with a specific village name, the combination of ochre-washed walls, tightly clustered buildings, and surrounding dense foliage strongly evokes the architecture and terrain of the Luberon and wider Provence region—areas Neveu frequently painted throughout his career.
The composition features a cluster of warm-toned houses nestled among cypress trees, shrubs, and rocky outcrops. Neveu employs his signature combination of loose graphite underdrawing and fluid, organic brushwork to build a lively and spontaneous depiction of place. The rooftops glow with sienna and burnt umber, creating contrast against the deep greens of surrounding trees and the cool, distant blue of the mountains. The foreground is rendered in an abstract, gestural manner, suggesting wild grasses, earth, and scattered sunlit stones without over-defining the forms—an approach typical of Neveu’s plein-air practice.
The wide band of unpainted paper at the bottom indicates that this piece may have been part of a studio exercise or preparatory landscape study, offering insight into the artist’s working routine. This gives the piece a unique charm and makes it particularly appealing to collectors who appreciate the artistry behind process-based works.
Neveu (b.1929), known for his mastery of colour harmony and expressive structural drawing, studied at the École Boulle and the École des Beaux-Arts before becoming Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris. His works have been exhibited at the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Artistes Français and remain admired for their vivid capture of French light and atmosphere.
Ideal for collectors of Provence hillscapes, French countryside paintings, Post-Impressionist studies, and loose plein-air works, this piece offers a warm, immersive glimpse into the southern French landscape.
Unframed and ready for bespoke presentation.

Trees in a French Country Landscape. Watercolor.
Located in Cotignac, FR
A French watercolour on paper landscape by Roger Decaux. The work is signed and dated (as yet undeciphered) bottom right. Presented in a wood frame with cut card mount.
A fresh and charming view of trees in a landscape. Decaux has used simple, fluid but strong strokes for this composition. One can feel the influence of 'abstraction of form' that was a part of his later work. The eye is drawn from the trees to the surrounding fields, the touches of colour to the right and then to the silhouette of the hills beyond. The use of watercolour at its best.
Roger DECAUX was born in 1919 in Dombasle sur Meurthe in the Lorraine. He studied art in Paris with Gino Severini and Jan Brusselmans...
