Size (H x W): 8.5 x 6.5 inches

Description: This expressive watercolor by Pierre Neveu depicts a sunlit Provençal hilltop village, rendered with the artist’s characteristic blend of energetic linework, vibrant colour, and atmospheric light. Neveu, known for capturing the essence of French regional landscapes, focuses here on the stacked geometry of traditional stone houses, each crowned with warm terracotta roof tiles that glow against a rich cobalt sky. The composition evokes villages such as Les Baux-de-Provence, Gordes, or Roussillon, where historic architecture rises dramatically against the surrounding hills.
In this work, Neveu uses quick, gestural strokes to establish structure, while loose washes create luminous transitions between light and shadow. Sunlit façades are painted in soft creams, yellows, and warm ochres, contrasted by deep greens of clustered trees that weave through the stepped rooftops. The rock formations at the top of the composition add a sense of place, suggesting the fortified cliffside settings typical in the region.
Neveu’s training at the École Boulle and École des Beaux-Arts is evident in the confident interplay between drawing and colour. His approach is both architectural and intuitive, capturing the rhythm of Mediterranean settlements without sacrificing spontaneity. The lower portion of the page bears the beginnings of further washwork, a hallmark of Neveu’s plein-air practice where the immediacy of the moment dictated the pace of his studies.
This piece will appeal to collectors of French provincial landscapes, Post-Impressionist watercolor, and scenes capturing the distinctive light and warm tones of Southern France. Its inviting palette and lively composition make it ideal for brightening and enriching both contemporary and traditional interiors.
