Description: TThis radiant watercolor and gouache landscape by Pierre Neveu depicts a quintessential Provençal village scene, complete with terracotta rooftops, pale stone buildings, and a distinctive church tower rising against a deep Mediterranean sky. The architecture and colour palette strongly evoke the rural towns of the Luberon and Vaucluse regions, areas Neveu painted extensively during his mid-career travels in southern France. The warm ochres and siennas of the rooftops form a vibrant contrast with the cool blue shadows cast across the façades. The church tower—rendered in crisp white with elegant arched openings—becomes the focal point of the composition, catching the bright southern light. Neveu’s expressive brushwork and fluid layering of watercolor allow the surrounding greenery to dissolve into soft shapes of blue, emerald, and yellow, suggesting olive trees, cypresses, and dense Mediterranean shrubs clustered around the village walls. A low stone wall stretches across the middle ground, grounding the composition and separating the built environment from the loosely painted foreground pathway. The distinctive underdrawing visible in places—quick graphite marks and gestural lines—reveals Neveu’s process, merging structural draftsmanship with painterly spontaneity. The result is an image full of movement, warmth, and atmospheric depth. Collectors of Provençal village scenes, French church architecture, Mediterranean landscapes, and Post-Impressionist watercolors will find this piece especially appealing. It reflects the charm and timelessness of rural France while showcasing Neveu’s ability to balance colour harmony, texture, and light with confident ease. Pierre Neveu (b.1929), trained at the École Boulle and the École des Beaux-Arts, later became Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris. He exhibited widely at the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Artistes Français and is celebrated for his expressive landscapes and architectural subjects, particularly those of Provence, Brittany, and coastal France. Unframed and ready for bespoke presentation, this painting offers a luminous and inviting glimpse into the sunlit villages of southern France.
