Description: This expressive watercolour by Pierre Neveu captures the Provençal village of Sablet, perched on its characteristic hillside with terracotta rooftops and sunlit stone buildings. Neveu’s loose, lyrical style lends the scene a sense of movement and immediacy, reminiscent of sketchbook studies made on location during travels through the French countryside.
The painting depicts Sablet’s clustered houses rising in layers, their warm tones contrasted against cool shadows and the fresh blues of a summer sky. The village church tower stands proudly at the right of the composition, anchoring the scene and drawing the viewer’s eye across the rooftops. Cypress trees punctuate the landscape, adding height and rhythm while emphasising the distinctly Mediterranean character of the region.
In the foreground, Neveu uses broad washes and gestural marks to evoke a patchwork of fields and greenery, suggesting the agricultural land that surrounds the village. Subtle pencil underdrawing remains visible, contributing to the spontaneity and charm typical of the artist’s plein-air technique.
