Description: A charming and characterful Provençal scene by French Post-Impressionist Pierre Neveu, this watercolour captures the everyday warmth of a southern French village square. The composition centres on a sunlit bell tower and ochre church, framed by leafy plane trees and figures relaxing in the shade—a familiar sight in the villages of Provence. Neveu’s pen-and-ink outlines give the architecture structure and rhythm, while translucent washes of golden ochre, terracotta, and cobalt blue evoke the dry heat and vivid skies of the Mediterranean.
The relaxed figures lend a narrative dimension to the scene—perhaps neighbours pausing to talk or children playing beneath the trees—imbuing the composition with lived-in charm. Pierre Neveu studied at the École Boulle and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris before becoming Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris in 1953. His works, celebrated for their compositional discipline and luminous palette, bridge the boundary between modern design and lyrical observation. Exhibiting widely at the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Artistes Français, he was later appointed President of the painting section, affirming his place in the canon of 20th-century French art.

Pierre Neveu was born in Paris. He was a professor of Drawing. Some of his exhibits include Invite d'honneur, Salon de Margency (1998); Nolan-Rankin Galleries Houston, Texas (1997); Kulturklub des Europäischen Patentamt Munich (1987); Beernau Foret-Noir (1985); and Marie de Tour-sur-Marne, Champagne (1983).
