Description: A lively southern French village scene by the well-listed Post-Impressionist painter Pierre Neveu, depicting a sunlit rural setting typical of Provence and the wider south of France. Executed in watercolor and gouache on artist paper, this expressive composition centres on a mature tree set before a cluster of terracotta-roofed buildings, capturing the warmth and atmosphere of village life in the Mediterranean climate.
Neveu’s confident brushwork combines fluid washes with darker linear accents, allowing architectural forms and foliage to emerge organically from layered colour. Warm ochres, soft browns, and terracotta reds describe the village walls and rooftops, while cool blues and turquoise tones animate the sky and shaded foreground. The tree’s branching structure anchors the composition, its sweeping limbs creating rhythm and guiding the viewer’s eye through the scene.
Rather than focusing on strict detail, Neveu suggests form through tone and movement, leaving areas of the paper exposed to heighten the sense of light and air. This balance between control and spontaneity is characteristic of his mature landscape work, giving the painting both immediacy and structure. Pierre Neveu studied at the École Boulle and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris before becoming Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris. He exhibited widely at major French salons, including the Salon d’Automne and the Salon of French Artists, where he later served as President of the painting section. Sourced directly from the artist’s estate, this work is a strong example of Neveu’s village landscapes and his enduring engagement with light, architecture, and the rural south of France.

Pierre Neveu was born in Paris. He was a professor of Drawing.
