About the Item

Title: Revestel Provence Rooftops with Cypress Trees and Mountain Views Watercolor Artist: Pierre Neveu (French b.1929) Medium: Watercolour on artist paper, unframed Size (H x W): 8.25 x 6 inches inscribed Revestel in the artist’s hand Condition: Good overall, with visible grid lines and light handling marks consistent with an artist’s working study Provenance: From the artist’s studio sale in France; all works by this artist in our collection originate from the artist’s estate. Description: This expressive watercolor and gouache landscape by Pierre Neveu depicts the sunlit rooftops and sweeping mountain views of Revestel, a small Provençal hamlet overlooking some of the most atmospheric scenery in southern France. The inscription Revestel, clearly handwritten by the artist at the lower right, firmly anchors the scene to this serene hillside location—making the work especially appealing for collectors drawn to Provence, French travel art, and Mediterranean village landscapes. Neveu captures the warm terracotta glow of the rooftops with rich oranges and siennas, offset against deep cypress greens and the cool, velvety blues of the distant mountain ranges. This interplay of warm and cool tones is characteristic of his plein-air studies and lends the painting a strong sense of place and time—likely a late-summer or early-autumn afternoon. The foreground is filled with loose strokes of yellow and olive, suggesting dry grasses catching the sunlight as they sway in the breeze. One distinctive feature of this work is the visible graphite grid lightly drawn across the surface. This indicates that the painting served as a preparatory study for a larger composition, offering a rare insight into Neveu’s working process. Rather than detracting from the artwork, the grid adds a sense of immediacy and authenticity, highlighting the artist’s meticulous approach to structure and proportion before scaling a composition up. Collectors of Provençal landscapes, French hilltop villages, Post-Impressionist studies, and architectural countryside scenes will find this piece especially compelling. It carries both aesthetic appeal and scholarly interest, showcasing Neveu’s talent for capturing the geometry, colour harmonies, and atmospheric depth of the southern French landscape. Pierre Neveu (b.1929), trained at the École Boulle and the École des Beaux-Arts, later became Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris and exhibited widely at the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Artistes Français. His landscapes and architectural studies remain highly sought after for their light-filled palettes and expressive structure. Unframed and ready for bespoke presentation, this is a characterful and location-rich study from one of Provence’s most evocative settings.

Trees in a French Country Landscape. Watercolor.

A French watercolour on paper landscape by Roger Decaux. The work is signed and dated (as yet undeciphered) bottom right. Presented in a wood frame with cut card mount. A fresh and charming view of trees in a landscape. Decaux has used simple, fluid but strong strokes for this composition. One can feel the influence of 'abstraction of form' that was a part of his later work. The eye is drawn from the trees to the surrounding fields, the touches of colour to the right and then to the silhouette of the hills beyond. The use of watercolour at its best. Roger DECAUX was born in 1919 in Dombasle sur Meurthe in the Lorraine. He studied art in Paris with Gino Severini and Jan Brusselmans...
