Description: A delicate, atmospheric study by Pierre Neveu (b.1929), depicting a riverside landscape beneath a pale winter sky. The composition centres on a small cluster of bare trees and a cottage on the left bank, balanced against the faint skyline of a distant town — a masterclass in restraint and tonal harmony.
Executed in fluid washes of muted grey, umber, and soft blue, the work conveys stillness and isolation through economy of mark. Neveu’s fine ink lines outline the skeletal trees, while transparent layers of watercolour evoke both reflection and air. The sparse handling of the water’s surface suggests an almost meditative observation of nature — a quiet moment rather than a spectacle.
A graduate of the École Boulle and École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Neveu combined the discipline of architectural drawing with the spontaneity of modern French painting. Awarded the Gold Medal at the Salon des Artistes Français (1994), his practice often blended precise structure with emotional subtlety.
