About the Item

Title: Rochefort en Terre Brittany Village Square Stone Fountain French Street Scene Artist: Pierre Neveu (French b.1929) Medium: Watercolour on artist paper, unframed Size (H x W): 6.5 x 8.75 inches Inscribed “Rochefort en Terre” lower right Condition: Good overall, with light handling marks and minor natural toning consistent with age. Provenance: From the artist’s studio sale in France; all works by this artist in our collection originate from the artist’s estate. Description: This evocative architectural study by Pierre Neveu depicts the historic village of Rochefort-en-Terre, one of Brittany’s most celebrated medieval communes. Known for its cobbled lanes, stone houses, and flower-filled squares, the village has long attracted artists for its atmospheric streetscapes and beautifully preserved architecture. Neveu’s loose yet attentive rendering captures both the structure and charm of this iconic location. At the centre of the composition is a large stone fountain or planter, painted in deep tonal greys that anchor the scene. Behind it, the ochre and pale stone façades of traditional Breton buildings rise in soft washes of watercolour, their windows and rooflines suggested with quick pencil marks. The contrast between the warm buildings and the cool shadows cast across the square reflects Neveu’s skill in capturing light and depth without overworking the surface. Above, the brilliantly clear sky — rendered in a bright wash of cobalt blue — frames the cluster of rooftops and adds a vivid counterpoint to the muted tones below. Small touches of red and orange enliven the composition, hinting at shutters, pots, or architectural details typical of Rochefort-en-Terre’s picturesque streets. Neveu’s spontaneous draughtsmanship, layered washes, and confident balance of detail and suggestion make this a quintessential example of his plein-air village studies. Collectors of French regional landscapes, architectural watercolours, and scenes of Brittany will find this piece especially compelling, offering an intimate and atmospheric glimpse into one of France’s most beautiful villages.

Watercolour Street Scene of Josselin in Brittany with Church Tower
By Fanch Lel
Located in Cirencester, Gloucestershire
Title: Watercolour Street Scene of Josselin in Brittany with Church Tower by Fanche Lel Signed: Yes Size: 9.5 inches (height) x 12.5 inches (width) Watercolor painting on paper, unframed Condition: The painting is in good condition, with minor signs of handling at the edges. Provenance: All the paintings we have for sale by this artist have come from the artists estate and have had no previous owners at all. Description: This evocative watercolour by French artist Fanch Lel portrays a quiet street in the historic town of Josselin in Brittany, France. The artist inscribed the piece with “Josselia,” likely a personal or phonetic variation of the town’s name. Josselin is known for its medieval streets, slate-roofed buildings, and towering Gothic church spires—all elements reflected in this gentle and atmospheric composition. Painted in 1997, the scene is rendered in loose, flowing brushstrokes of slate blue, pale lilac, and ochre, capturing the stillness of a small Breton village. The central church steeple rises above the town, anchoring the otherwise softly abstracted architecture. A solitary figure walks along the cobbled street, adding a human element to the otherwise serene setting. This work is ideal for collectors of regional French townscapes, watercolour lovers...

Parisian Street Scene
By Roland Dubuc
Located in London, GB
'Parisian Street Scene', watercolour on art paper, by Roland DuBuc (circa 1970s). This artwork is a delightful depiction of a Parisian street which scales the hill to the neighbourhood of Montmartre, the home of the basilica of Sacré-Cœur. DuBuc's artworks serve as a love letter to the city of Paris and are recognised by his incredibly charming style. The signed artwork is in good overall condition and has been newly framed with anti-reflective glass. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying this listing. Upon request a video of the piece may be provided. About the Artist: Roland DuBuc (1924-1998), French artist, the sixth of 13 children and son of a construction worker. The very precariousness of the family's financial situation forced him to go to work at the age of 14. In extreme poverty, he moved to Rouen where he was lodged by the Salvation Army. During that time he struck up friendships with several artists who gave him advice and taught him techniques of drawing. He moved to other cities later where he met painters including, among others, Fred Pailhès...
