Description: This expressive watercolour depicts a garden entrance scene in Rustrel, a village in the Luberon region of Provence. Although unsigned, the work is inscribed “Rustrel” and is consistent in style, palette, and handling with Pierre Neveu’s Provençal landscape studies.
The composition centres on a simple iron gate set between pale stone posts, partially obscured by dense trees and foliage. Layered green washes dominate the scene, punctuated by deep ink line work that defines branches, shrubs, and architectural edges. Behind the vegetation, warm yellow and ochre tones suggest village buildings catching southern light.
Neveu’s characteristic approach is evident in the balance between loose, fluid watercolour washes and animated linear marks, allowing forms to emerge through suggestion rather than detail. The foreground path and gate draw the viewer inward, while the surrounding greenery creates a sense of enclosure and quiet domestic space.
