Description: A detailed and atmospheric view of Rustrel, a Provençal village known for its ochre hills and sunlit stone houses, by French Post-Impressionist Pierre Neveu. Executed in watercolour and pen, the composition leads the eye along a narrow village street toward a distant hillside, framed by terracotta roofs and textured stone façades. The play of sunlight and shadow across the steps and walls captures the distinctive warmth and geometry of southern France.
Neveu’s use of pen and wash reveals both his architectural precision and painterly instinct. The faint pencil grid and small compositional sketch at the lower margin show his disciplined design process—possibly in preparation for a larger canvas. His colour palette of golden ochre, dusty pink, and cerulean blue evokes the heat and brilliance of the Luberon region, where Rustrel lies.
Pierre Neveu (b.1929) studied at the École Boulle and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris before becoming Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris. He exhibited extensively at the Salon d’Automne and Salon des Artistes Français, where he later served as President of the painting section. His work reflects the harmony between architectural study and expressive colour, hallmarks of modern French landscape painting.

Pierre Neveu was born in Paris. He was a professor of Drawing. Some of his exhibits include Invite d'honneur, Salon de Margency (1998); Nolan-Rankin Galleries Houston, Texas (1997); Kulturklub des Europäischen Patentamt Munich (1987); Beernau Foret-Noir (1985); and Marie de Tour-sur-Marne, Champagne (1983).
