Description: This expressive watercolour and ink study by Pierre Neveu depicts the Provençal village of Sablet, a commune nestled in the Vaucluse and known for its terraced vineyards and ochre-toned houses. Neveu’s lively draughtsmanship and looseness of touch capture both the charm and topography of the region, emphasising the gentle rise of the hill and the way the buildings cluster around the church tower, which stands as the focal point of the composition.
In the foreground, wide sweeps of warm terracotta pigment evoke the dry, sun-baked earth typical of the southern Rhône valley. These rich tones contrast beautifully with the cool greens of the mid-ground vegetation, where Neveu uses layered washes and quick ink marks to suggest vines, shrubs, and cultivated fields without ever becoming literal.
The village itself is rendered with a mix of crisp architectural edges and loosely indicated forms. White façades, red roofs, and touches of ochre capture the distinctive palette of Provençal stone and stucco. The church tower rises above the rooftops, subtly shaded to anchor the scene and guide the viewer’s eye upward toward the soft lavender-blue hills behind it.
Above, Neveu washes the sky in pale blues and greys, creating a sense of movement and atmosphere that suggests a breezy day with shifting light. His economical use of line, combined with rich but controlled colour, gives the work an immediacy that reflects his skill as a plein-air observer.
A strong example for collectors of French landscapes and modern regional studies.
