Condition: Good overall with minor handling marks and light edge wear consistent with age; perforated margin to the left edge from original sketchbook binding. Colours remain vivid and surface well preserved.
Provenance: From the artist’s studio sale in France; all works by this artist in our collection originate from the artist’s estate.
Description: An expressive study of a fishing boat in Saint-Nazaire harbour by Pierre Neveu. Painted in gouache and watercolour, it captures a red-hulled vessel moored beside whitewashed quays beneath a muted sky. The composition juxtaposes sweeping colour fields with precise linear accents, achieving both movement and calm. Neveu’s use of opaque and transparent layers suggests sunlight dancing across water, while his restricted palette of coral, grey-blue, and cream conveys the distinctive light of the Atlantic coast.
Saint-Nazaire’s working docks and shipyards inspired many modern French painters of the post-war period. Here Neveu balances industrial elements with an intimate, almost poetic mood. The simplified geometry of masts and buildings reveals his background in design, yet his brushwork retains a natural fluidity typical of plein-air practice.
