Description: This atmospheric wetland landscape is an original watercolour by Pierre Neveu, executed in 1982 and inscribed “Stes Maries”, referring to Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, the coastal town situated at the heart of the Camargue in southern France.
The composition captures the distinctive low-lying marshland of the region, with broad horizontal bands of colour evoking reeds, water channels, and open sky. Neveu layers translucent washes of green, ochre, and deep blue to describe the shifting relationship between land and water, while darker ink lines and accents define vegetation and shoreline contours.
In the foreground, a reflective expanse of water dominates the lower portion of the sheet, rendered in rich blue and violet tones that mirror the muted sky above. The middle ground introduces dense grasses and marsh plants, painted with loose, gestural strokes that convey movement and texture. Beyond, the landscape flattens into distant banks and tree lines, dissolving into pale, atmospheric hues that suggest depth and distance.
Neveu’s handling is confident and expressive, allowing washes to bleed and settle naturally while retaining a strong underlying structure. The restrained palette and panoramic horizontal emphasis reflect the quiet, expansive character of the Camargue landscape.
This signed and dated work will appeal to collectors of French Post-Impressionist watercolours, Camargue and Provençal landscapes, and European works on paper with identifiable geographic context. Unframed and ready for bespoke presentation.
