Description: In this lively plein-air composition, Pierre Neveu (b.1929) captures the easy rhythm and warmth of a summer street performance. A guitarist and trumpeter share the foreground — one seated in a magenta dress, the other in jeans and a yellow shirt — framed by sketchbook spontaneity and unfinished outlines that lend the piece a rare immediacy.
The watercolour is alive with Neveu’s characteristic confidence in gesture and tone: sunlight bounces off warm yellows and purples, contrasted with quick graphite studies to the right, revealing the artist’s working process. The unfinished elements — a lightly sketched banjo, hints of bystanders — make this work feel like a moment frozen mid-creation, where observation and imagination meet.
Trained at the École Boulle and École des Beaux-Arts, Neveu balanced academic technique with expressive looseness, becoming Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris and later President of the Painting Section at the Salon des Artistes Français.

Pierre Neveu was born in Paris. He was a professor of Drawing. Some of his exhibits include Invite d'honneur, Salon de Margency (1998); Nolan-Rankin Galleries Houston, Texas (1997); Kulturklub des Europäischen Patentamt Munich (1987); Beernau Foret-Noir (1985); and Marie de Tour-sur-Marne, Champagne (1983).
