Description: This beautiful architectural watercolour by Pierre Neveu (b.1929) captures a quiet alleyway beneath a stone arch, likely in the south of France. The composition is a masterclass in spatial rhythm — the narrow passage draws the eye towards a distant patch of blue sky, while the enclosing ochre walls create a strong sense of depth and enclosure. A single street lantern and a scattering of architectural details bring life to the sun-drenched scene.
Neveu’s confident draughtsmanship is evident in every line. His combination of loose washes and fine structural sketching gives the piece both immediacy and permanence — the viewer feels the heat of the afternoon and the cool shade beneath the arch. His muted palette of ochre, umber, and cerulean reflects the harmony between natural light and built form that defines much of southern European architecture.
Stamped “Champs Élysées par Pierre Neveu”, this work forms part of the artist’s personal studio collection. A graduate of the École Boulle and the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Neveu later served as Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris and was awarded the Gold Medal of the Salon des Artistes Français in 1994.

Pierre Neveu
Pierre Neveu was born in Paris. He was a professor of Drawing. Some of his exhibits include Invite d'honneur, Salon de Margency (1998); Nolan-Rankin Galleries Houston, Texas (1997); Kulturklub des Europäischen Patentamt Munich (1987); Beernau Foret-Noir (1985); and Marie de Tour-sur-Marne, Champagne (1983).
