Description: This radiant watercolor and gouache painting by Pierre Neveu captures a sunlit street in Menton, the celebrated coastal town on the French Riviera known for its pastel façades, terracotta roofs, and glowing Mediterranean light. Menton sits near the Italian border and has long inspired artists for its bright colour palette, hilltop old town, and distinctive shuttered houses—all beautifully reflected in Neveu’s atmospheric interpretation of the scene.
The composition follows a winding street framed by warm, sun-soaked buildings in shades of ochre, terracotta, and dusty lavender. An archway leads the viewer deeper into the village, while strong sunlight casts violet shadows and illuminates the tiled rooftops above. Neveu uses loose yet intentional brushwork to evoke the shimmering heat of the Riviera and the relaxed charm of Menton’s historic quarter. Lush greenery spills from a balcony planter, adding a burst of yellow-green that enhances the warmth and vibrancy of the work.
Collectors who love Mediterranean architecture, French travel paintings, Provence and Riviera villages, or European street scenes will find this an especially appealing example. The inscription “Menton” gives it excellent location-based search value and ties the work to one of the Côte d’Azur’s most beloved artistic destinations.
Pierre Neveu (b.1929) studied at the École Boulle and the École des Beaux-Arts before becoming Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris. Known for his luminous palettes and refined sense of structure, he exhibited widely across France, including the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Artistes Français.
Unframed and ready for bespoke presentation, this piece brings the warmth, colour, and romance of the French Riviera directly into the home.
