Description: A masterful watercolour of Menton, the celebrated town on the French Riviera, by Pierre Neveu (b.1929). The scene captures a quiet sunlit staircase winding between whitewashed façades, punctuated by green shutters, flowering terraces, and a deep cobalt sky. Neveu’s precise architectural draughtsmanship is softened by fluid washes and layered shadows, conveying the Mediterranean interplay of light and cool shade.
The composition leads the eye rhythmically upward through the stepped ascent, evoking the charm of Menton’s hillside lanes where French and Italian influences converge. The warm reflections on the stonework and the architectural simplicity suggest a timeless southern tranquillity, filtered through Neveu’s distinctly modern sensibility.
Stamped “Champs Élysées par Pierre Neveu”, the work comes from the artist’s studio collection. A graduate of the École Boulle and the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Neveu became Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris and exhibited widely across France, winning the Gold Medal of the Salon des Artistes Français in 1994.
This beautifully balanced study is both architectural and poetic — a quintessential example of Neveu’s ability to distil the light and structure of Mediterranean France into a work of serene refinement.

Pierre Neveu
Pierre Neveu was born in Paris. He was a professor of Drawing. Some of his exhibits include Invite d'honneur, Salon de Margency (1998); Nolan-Rankin Galleries Houston, Texas (1997); Kulturklub des Europäischen Patentamt Munich (1987); Beernau Foret-Noir (1985); and Marie de Tour-sur-Marne, Champagne (1983).
