About the Item

Title: Sunlit Street with Figure French Modernist Watercolour by Pierre Neveu Artist: Pierre Neveu (French b.1929) Medium: Watercolour on card, unframed Size (H x W): 9.5 x 7.75 inches Condition: Good overall, with light handling marks and slight edge wear consistent with age Provenance: From the artist’s studio sale in France; all works by this artist in our collection originate from the artist’s estate. Description: A beautifully atmospheric street scene by French Post-Impressionist painter Pierre Neveu (b.1929), this original watercolour and gouache captures the quiet rhythm of life within a sunlit village. The composition is defined by strong architectural contrasts: whitewashed walls, shadowed alleys, and crisp angular forms that frame a single figure walking through the scene. Neveu’s precise yet fluid handling of line and tone lends a modernist edge to the work, while his layered washes of blue, grey, and ochre evoke the interplay of sunlight and shadow along narrow streets. The solitary figure, depicted with a loose hat and soft earth-toned clothing, introduces a human presence amid the geometric calm of the setting. The artist’s mastery of spatial balance and tonal variation transforms the simple architecture into a lyrical composition, celebrating light, structure, and movement. The work reflects Neveu’s ongoing exploration of how human and built environments interact—an enduring theme throughout his career. Pierre Neveu trained at the École Boulle and the National School of Fine Arts in Paris, later becoming Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris. He exhibited widely, including at the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Artistes Français, where he was awarded the Gold Medal in 1994. Sourced directly from the artist’s estate, this work exemplifies Neveu’s sophisticated use of watercolour and gouache—ideal for collectors drawn to mid-century French modernism, architectural scenes, and atmospheric figurative compositions.

'Parisian Street Scene', watercolour on art paper, by Roland DuBuc (circa 1970s). This artwork is a delightful depiction of a Parisian street which scales the hill to the neighbourhood of Montmartre, the home of the basilica of Sacré-Cœur. DuBuc's artworks serve as a love letter to the city of Paris and are recognised by his incredibly charming style. The signed artwork is in good overall condition and has been newly framed with anti-reflective glass. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying this listing. Upon request a video of the piece may be provided. About the Artist: Roland DuBuc (1924-1998), French artist, the sixth of 13 children and son of a construction worker. The very precariousness of the family's financial situation forced him to go to work at the age of 14. In extreme poverty, he moved to Rouen where he was lodged by the Salvation Army. During that time he struck up friendships with several artists who gave him advice and taught him techniques of drawing. He moved to other cities later where he met painters including, among others, Fred Pailhès...
