Description: A radiant mixed-media study by Pierre Neveu (b.1929), depicting the sunlit village of Gordes, one of the most beautiful towns in Provence. Neveu captures the intimacy of a narrow hillside street leading toward the open valley, its terracotta roofs and ochre walls glowing beneath a vibrant blue sky.
Combining the fluid transparency of watercolour with the textured luminosity of pastel, Neveu achieves an extraordinary sense of atmosphere. The pastel strokes soften the edges of the sunlit walls and cobblestones, lending warmth and material depth to the architectural forms. This dual technique — both structured and expressive — allows light to shimmer across the stone surfaces and recede naturally into the mountain backdrop.
Gordes has long inspired painters for its perched beauty and play of light across its medieval facades. Here, Neveu distils its essence through confident draughtsmanship and colour harmonies that balance cool shadow with radiant Mediterranean tones.
Trained at the École Boulle and École des Beaux-Arts, Neveu became Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris and exhibited regularly at the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Artistes Français, where he later served as President of the painting section. His work remains celebrated for its clarity, warmth, and timeless portrayal of French architecture.

Pierre Neveu was born in Paris. He was a professor of Drawing.
