About the Item

Title: Valletta Grand Harbour Fort St Angelo and Barrakka Gardens Mediterranean Watercolor Artist: Pierre Neveu (French b.1929) Medium: Watercolour on artist paper, unframed Size (H x W): 6.25 x 8.75 inches Unsigned (inscribed with Grand Harbour, Château St Ange, Jardin de Barraca) Condition: Good overall, with light handling marks and minor natural toning consistent with age. Provenance: From the artist’s studio sale in France; all works by this artist in our collection originate from the artist’s estate. Description: This atmospheric Mediterranean cityscape is an original watercolor and gouache by French Post-Impressionist painter Pierre Neveu, depicting one of Malta’s most iconic views: Valletta’s Grand Harbour seen from the Upper Barrakka Gardens. The artist’s handwritten notes along the lower edge confirm the exact vantage point—Grand Harbour, Château St Ange (the historical French name for Fort St. Angelo), and Jardin de Barraca—providing valuable contextual detail for collectors and anchoring the work firmly in its Maltese setting. Neveu captures the sweeping limestone cityscape with a fluid, economical hand, layering warm ochre, sienna, and soft grey washes to evoke the densely built skyline of Valletta. The domes and bell towers of the city—painted in quick touches of red, gold, and dark ink—rise in rhythmic succession across the horizon, while the broad sweep of the harbour fills the foreground in luminous shades of turquoise and pale blue. In the lower foreground, two domed architectural structures typical of the Baroque chapels near the Barrakka Gardens are rendered with confident, expressive linework. Their red and white striped domes provide a striking focal point, grounding the composition and adding architectural richness against the airy expanse of water and sky. Neveu’s sensitivity to place, light, and structural detail—honed during his studies at the École Boulle and the École des Beaux-Arts—makes this piece a particularly compelling example of his travel-themed works. Ideal for collectors of Mediterranean landscapes, harbour scenes, or anyone with a personal connection to Malta, the painting offers both fine artistic quality and a true sense of location. Unframed and ready for bespoke presentation.

RAFAEL DURAN BENET (Terrassa, 1931 – Barcelona, 2015) Title: Port of Barcelona Technique: Oil on canvas-board Dimensions: 61 × 46 cm — (24 × 18.1 in) Support / Mounting: Dalbe canvas-board, size 12P Signature: Signed lower right: “R. D.” Period / Date: c. 1980–1990 Condition: Very good. Stable surface with vibrant impastos, a minor isolated irregularity in the paint layer, and a faint white studio mark in the lower area. No losses or retouching. Framing: Unframed. Provenance: Private collection, Sitges. (Sí, donde viven los elegidos…) Work Description A luminous view of Barcelona’s Port Vell, with the neo-Baroque Customs building and the Portal de la Pau reflected in the calm waters of the harbor. In the foreground, sailboats and fishing boats form a horizontal frieze that contrasts with the vertical silhouettes of palm trees and towers in the background. The brushstroke is free, broken, rich in impasto and chromatic transparency, capturing the trembling air of the Mediterranean. Ochres, pinks and blues merge into a vibrant atmosphere, characteristic of the artistic maturity of Rafael Durán Benet, who managed to infuse urban landscapes with the same poetic spirit present in his views of Cadaqués and the Costa Brava. Artistic Commentary Rafael Durán Benet represents the continuity of post-war Catalan Impressionism, heir to Joaquim Mir and to his uncle Rafael Benet i Vancells, yet with a looser and more modern interpretation. His painting blends architectural precision with chromatic freedom, achieving a balance between structure and emotion. In this work, port architecture becomes a pictorial motif where color and light are the true protagonists. The sense of movement on the water and the warm atmosphere evoke the same sensitivity found in artists such as Ignacio Gil Sala, Jordi Pagans Montsalvatje...
