Description: This animated Provençal village scene is an original watercolour by the well-listed Post-Impressionist painter Pierre Neveu (French b. 1929). The work is inscribed “Viens”, referring to the historic hilltop village of Viens in the Vaucluse region of Provence, situated within the Luberon landscape.
The composition centres on a village square dominated by a clock tower rising above tiled rooftops and dense trees, with small figures gathered below, suggesting the everyday rhythm of village life in southern France. Neveu uses confident ink line to define the architectural forms, while expressive watercolour washes bring warmth, movement, and atmosphere to the scene.
Ochres, terracotta reds, and soft yellows describe the sunlit façades and roofs, balanced by deep greens in the foliage and cool blue washes in the sky. The trees are rendered with loose, gestural marks that partially obscure the buildings, creating a layered sense of depth and reinforcing the feeling of a settled, lived-in village environment.
