He later continued his study of painting with Sergei Bongart whom he credits with encouraging him to paint en plein aire. Erickson now paints outside ninety percent of the time. With his pastel landscapes Erickson seeks to capture locations in a new way. Erickson studies the landscape and searches for the unique, special quality of the place. He is pleased if a viewer who is familiar with the location pauses and notices something new in the way Erickson has captured the place. The artist has exhibited and won numerous awards. He has also authored two manuals for artists, "Four Steps to Master Color and Light; A Plein Air Approach to Better Landscapes" and "Color Only Exists in the Mind; The Phenomenon of Perception of Color and Light." Reif Erickson is a member of the California Art Club, the Sierra Pastel Society and a Distinguished Pastelist of the Pastel Society of the West Coast.
