Samuel Phillips Jackson was born in the city of Bristol in September 1830, the son of the equally eminent watercolourist Samuel Jackson. He was a landscape and marine painter and exhibited at both the British Institute and the Royal Academy winning the approval of John Ruskin.
Jackson was elected an associate of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1853, and after this confined himself mainly to watercolour. He contributed annually to their group exhibitions, often submitting the maximum amount of works allowed. He was elected a full member in 1876.
Works by Jackson are in the collections of the City Museum and Art Gallery, Bristol and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
