About the Item
From London with Love is a drawing series by Shizico Yi, composed of en plein air studies capturing quiet and private moment between the artist and the city in corners of London.
Shizico learnt her drawing craft by studying the works of Old Masters in the city’s museums and galleries. On her way to visit these great paintings, she began sketching the city itself—its architecture, landscape, atmosphere, and everyday magic.
Looking out from the National Gallery’s balcony toward Big Ben, over the heart of Trafalgar Square, one sees more than just landmarks—this is where memories have gathered, protests echoed, and celebrations spilled into the streets. A place where London’s past and present meet in quiet conversation.
This series of drawings are, in essence, a love letter to London—a tribute to the places woven with personal memories and shared moments with loved ones. Each scene captures not only a view, but a memory honoured and celebrated on paper.

We once asked each other:
If you could keep one painting from the gallery,
which would it be?
You stood for minutes,
left without an answer.
“Too hard,” you said. “There are too many.”
Mine was easy — in a heartbeat,
Velázquez’s Rokeby Venus.
I would take her, any day.
Like many things in life,
you found it hard to decide --
too many this and too many that.
And like many things in life,
I always want the one thing:
focused, fixated, obsessed.
The year after you were gone,
I knew I had to bring myself to WC2N 5DN.
One of those days after days in bed
when only being there might save me from drowning.
I found stillness in Olafur Eliasson’s yellow room.
I found answers in Constable’s clouds.
I found love in Van Gogh’s blue.
I found you next to my shoulder.
We walked to my Venus.
She is as beautiful and young
as the day I first fell in love with you.
Time does nothing to her --
and yet, you are gone.
Too bad I will never know
which painting you loved the most.
So come here to meet me,
if ever we cannot find each other.

Ink and oil on Georgian oil paper, a special oil paper Artboard (paper board with extra thickness 0.2 depth; with special texture for oil paint, by applying ink and charcoal, Shizico wished to bring out the texture in her drawings.)

Dr. Shizico Yi is a London based artist, working on installations, films and paintings; the documentary nature of her work often concerns about the loss, repetition, the everyday subject and memories . With design and film background, Shizico combines her interests making installation projects which relate to artist's personal life in relation to the society and human condition at large.
Shizico Yi holds a PhD in Fine Art awarded by UEL, UK 2017; she had completed a Master in Fine Art with a BA in Womenswear from UAL. London. She is also the Winner of Women Film Makers: Best Shorts Competition 2013 Los Angels. USA.
