About the Item
Estate stamped on verso paper of backing
board size 9 x 14 3/4 inches
As we travel back in American art, Central Park is one of the subjects, while done - is hard to come by and very desirable. For anyone who has lived in the city and frequented the Park, nostalgically it is often the evening views that are compelling and memorable perhaps due to the lighting installed on the grounds.
Simkhovitch is historically a very important American painter of the New Deal era or what is also known as the WPA group of artists. He was a muralist and in his time was a celebrated New York artist represented by the great Marie Sterner and the Downtown Galleries. He was beloved for his story of being able to leave the Soviet Union where he was a teacher at the Royal Academy but upon coming here, embraced America and its values and opportunities wholeheartedly.
This work is done a type of board used during this time which is not wood but is a heavier particle board. The work was in the estate of the artist and that is its provenance. It is not signed as he died young and works that were in the studio were left unsigned for the most part.
He had two predominant styles - one was very particular to the time which was that of a WPA artist which was representational and stylized and that o Impressionism. This work is done more in the Impressionist vain.

Simka Simkhovitch
Simka Simkhovitch was born near the city of Kiev, Russia. When he was 7, he spent a year in bed with a severe case of measles. To amuse himself he used to sketch an old mill outside his window, and thus decided to become an artist. He studied at an art school in Odessa and was recommended to attend the Imperial Academy of St. Petersburg (a singular honor in Russia at the time) before the war and revolution. Swept up into the army before he could attend, his work was hung in the Museum of Revolution in Leningrad. He resumed his studies in 1914 and graduated four years later. He was sent to the United States in 1924 to do illustrations for Soviet textbooks. He quickly applied for and gained U.S. citizenship. Simkhovitch integrated with the art world immediately and galleries such as Midtown Galleries and Marie Sterner took him on as part of their stable of artists. He also was employed by the WPA and executed major mural commissions throughout the country. One of his largest commissions was the Mississippi Court House. Life magazine profiled him twice with full-length features on his life here in this country as an artist. When he died at an early age, the Whitney Museum of Art in New York offered to do a retrospective and the widow denied the possibility and simply put his works away in storage. Considered a master draftsman and an adherent of certain classicism, Simkhovitch’s compositions are often built up in a complicated but well-managed counterpoint. But at heart, he is a romanticist preferring the dreamy colors of a Russian fairy tale.

Johann Berthelsen was born in Copenhagen in 1883, the 7th of seven children, to Conrad and Dorothea Karen Berthelsen. His parents were involved in artistic and professional circles. In 1890, his mother brought the children to America, settling in Manistee, Michigan, with her sister's family. They would eventually move to Manitowoc, Wisconsin, a city on the shore of Lake Michigan. As a teenager, Johann was actively involved in choirs and singing groups. And he always loved to draw and paint, and while he was too impatient to take well to schoolwork, and never went beyond the 5th grade.
Although he worked in several trades, Johann's mind and heart were always with the arts. As his voice matured, he also always wanted to be an actor, and at the age of 18 moved to Chicago where he reconnected with an old friend who was studying voice at the Chicago Musical...
