Presented in a wooden frame with a light gray mat.
After graduating from the Kansas City Art Institute and moving to San Francisco, Robert Morgan (American, 20th/21st Century) returned to Provincetown to study watercolor with the late Lee Boynton at the Cape Cod School of Art. He then began taking workshops at the Fine Arts Work Center with Jim Peters, Robert Henry and Gregory Amenoff, among others. He now sells his artworks through the Alden Gallery, opened by film writer and Banner Arts Editor Howard Karren and business partner, Stephen Syta, in 2007. Morgan’s subject matter is largely influenced by Provincetown, mostly consisting of men in relationship to the beach, the town and each other.

A master marine painter, Yelland painted in Gloucester Harbor. He sailed to San Francisco in 1874 to take a teaching position in art at Mills College in Oakland. From 1877 to 1894, he taught at the California School of Design. He was a decisive influence on a younger generation of California artists.
Full Bio:
Raymond Dabb Yelland was born in London, England on February 2, 1848. At the age of three, he immigrated with his family to New York City where he was raised and attended public schools. By the age of twelve, he had settled on art as a career.
He was born as Raymond Dabb, but due to the negative connotation of his name, his mother's maiden name, Yelland, was added. After serving under Sheridan in the Federal Army during the Civil War, Yelland attended Pennington Seminary in New Jersey. He studied art at the National Academy of Design from 1869 to 1871 with Page and Brevoort, and then taught at the Academy for one year.
With his new bride, he sailed around the Horn in 1874 to San Francisco where he would assume the position of an art instructor at Mills College in Oakland. In 1877, he traveled to England, and later continued his studies in Paris with Luc Oliver Merson. Upon his return to California, Yelland became assistant director of the San Francisco School of Design, and in 1888, assumed its directorship. Born in Santa Rosa, California to a pioneering California family, Elizabeth Hoen was known for her watercolor paintings, many of them landscapes, in impressionist style. Her father, Berthold Hoen started a trading post in the Carillo adobe, the first building erected in the Sonoma Valley. He also helped survey and lay out the city of Santa Rosa.
Elizabeth Hoen is not only the first painter to have their work cataloged into the Sonoma County Museum’s collection, but she was also a prolific artist in California in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and maintained a studio during a period when California art was largely dominated by men. A prominent California landscape painter of the late 19th and early 20th-century, Elmer Wachtel specialized in panoramic coastal scenes and desert and mountain landscapes using impressionist brushstrokes. His early works were tonalist in mood, and his later paintings were more decorative and light hearted.
Elmer Wachtel was an American artist who holds a high place in the early California school of Impressionism. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland on January 21, 1864 -- he received his artistic training at the Art Students' League of New York under William Merritt Chase, and the Art School in London 1901-02. While in California he resided and maintained studios in Los Angeles and Pasadena.
In 1904 Elmer Wachtel married the artist Marion Kavanaugh (1876-1954) in Chicago. Husband and wife were frequently seen painting the Southern California landscape -- they were known to have traveled by horseback over the San Marcos Pass to the Santa Inez Valley -- they traversed and painted the coastline between Gaviota and Conception Lighthouse (just north of Santa Barbara, California), the Cooper Ranch (north of Santa Barbara), Matilija Canyon and Ojai, California. Venturing south the couple made it to the San Luis Rey River (near present day Oceanside) and the Cerisa Loma Ranch (near San Diego). John O’Shea was born in Ireland and immigrated to New York at the age of 16 where he studied at the Adelphi Academy and the Art Students League. O’Shea moved to the Monterey Peninsula circa 1917 where he was busy in the local art community, serving as the President of the Carmel Art Association. About the artist:
Born in Santa Rosa, California to a pioneering California family, Elizabeth Hoen was known for her watercolor paintings, many of them landscapes, in impressionist style. Her father, Berthold Hoen started a trading post in the Carillo adobe, the first building erected in the Sonoma Valley. He also helped survey and lay out the city of Santa Rosa.
Elizabeth Hoen is not only the first painter to have their work cataloged into the Sonoma County Museum’s collection, but she was also a prolific artist in California in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and maintained a studio during a period when California art was largely dominated by men. Delicate and detailed etching by Orpha Klinker (American, 1891-1964). At the edge of an old Adobe building, a staircase leads to the second floor. The stucco on the walls of the building is cracked, revealing the stonework below. Next to the building is a garden with Corkscrew Willow trees. One of her first projects with which Orpha impressed the public was a notable series of her large color portraits of California pioneers in the L.A.TIMES under the heading of "Speaking Of Pioneers." This led to another series on landmarks and famous tales of early California including oil paintings of historic adobes, buildings, and trees of California.

Orpha Klinker (American, 1891-1964) graduated from Polytechnic High School, L.A. and later studied at U.C.L.A. Art School and at the Cannon Art School. Artists Paul Lauritz and Anna A. Hills of Laguna Beach were her first art teachers. She continued her study of art at the Julian and Colarossi Academies in Europe.
Some of her earliest work was in designing. Many pages of her fine pen work drawings appeared in Los Angeles newspapers, illustrating the fashions of the day, not only in clothes but in furniture and other things. Then for a time she did her work in New York City and later with the Ladies Home Journal in Philadelphia.
One of her first projects with which Orpha impressed the public was a notable series of her large color portraits of California pioneers in the L.A.TIMES under the heading of "Speaking Of Pioneers." This led to another series on landmarks and famous tales of early California including oil paintings of historic adobes, buildings, and trees of California.
From the Mexican border to Death Valley she roamed, meeting and painting portraits of such characters as Death Valley Scotty, Shoshone Johnny, the ancient Indian who supposedly saw the first white man come to Death Valley, Emanuel A. Speegle, "The Last of the 49'ers" (over 90 years of age) and others.
Orpha was active in keeping alive the memory of one historical event in particular, the signing of the Treaty of Cahuenga ending the Mexican War...
