About the Item
L'acquerello su carta rappresenta l'inaugurazione del monumento dedicato a Vittorio Emanuele II, primo re d'Italia, avvenuto a Torino il 9 settembre 1899, vent'anni dopo la sua morte. Esso fu voluto dal figlio Umberto I e realizzato dall'architetto Pietro Costa in bronzo granito, e vide una elaborazione molto lunga (dal 1882 al 1899) a causa di contrasti con il governo locale.
Alto 39 metri, presenta al centro, stante, il re circondato da colonne doriche, alla base le allegorie dell'Unità, della Fratellanza, del Lavoro e della Libertà e aquile reggenti corone con date importanti per l'unificazione d'Italia.
Nonostante l'attenzione ai dettagli e un'apparente realismo, il disegno è probabilmente frutto di fantasia o di un ricordo, in quanto confrontandolo con foto dell'epoca vi sono delle differenze con gli edifici, inoltre vi appaiono diversi periodo storici mischiati. Interessante notare la figura del Garibaldino in basso a destra.
