Nitun Kundu (1935-2006)
This would appear to be an early and rare, realist watercolour and pastel work on paper, painted in a modern and impressionist style by the Bangladeshi artist Nitun Kundu. The work is double-sided, and signed on the back but Kundu appears to have abandoned one of the paintings mid-way through and changed perspective and style. As such it is also an interesting painting in building up a profile of how Kundu worked.
It shows a river-side scene along the Buriganga in Dhaka. We are immediately pointed to the boats, the cargo and the people on the quayside. It shows the everyday, which is calm and people are going about their business. The buildings at the top of the image are the remnants of colonialism. Grand old architecture that show no sign of life and in this painting simply forms the backdrop.
Nitun Kundu was born in 1935. He joined the Fine Arts Institute in Dacca in 1954 graduating in 1959 after completed a five-year course. He was one of the leading proponents of the Modern Art Movement in what was to become Bangladesh.
During the Bangladesh Liberation War Kundu worked with the artist Quarrel Hassan at the public relations department of the Bangladesh Government-in-Exile at Mujibnagar In collaboration with Hassan and a group of notable artists namely Debas Chakraborty, Nasir Biswas, Pranesh Mandal and Biren Shome.
