About the Item
This 1960s watercolor by William C. Grauer shows a small fishing village (Caribbean or Mediterranean) caught in a bright, wind scrubbed moment. The buildings are simple white rectangles with tiled roofs, pushed up against a deep blue sky. They form a clean backdrop for the more casual life of the street in front of them: boats pulled ashore, nets slung between bare poles, people talking, resting, and working close to the ground.
Grauer organizes the scene with a few strong diagonals. The shoreline and the row of boats create a shallow triangle that guides the eye from the foreground toward the cluster of figures near the center. A yellow topped stall stands slightly off center, its vivid color and patterned fabric giving the painting a small jolt of energy. Behind it, an open, darker shed draws you deeper into the space. Laundry or flags hang in a loose line, echoing the nets on the right and adding a note of informal decoration.
The figures are small but lively. A group in red shirts sits or crouches on the bare earth near a faint wisp of smoke, suggesting cooking or a small fire. Others gather in a doorway farther back, half in shade, half in sun. Grauer paints them with quick, economical strokes, just enough to give a sense of posture and conversation. You can’t make out faces, yet the village feels inhabited and familiar.
Color carries much of the mood. The sky is a rich, even blue with soft clouds drifting across it, while the buildings stay mostly white and warm beige, catching the light. In contrast, the boats in the foreground—especially the red hull on the right and the yellow orange boat at the bottom—are painted in more saturated tones, so they pop against the earthier ground. The nets are handled lightly, with thin gray and brown lines that let the white of the paper show through, suggesting their airy, weathered fabric.
Grauer’s touch here is confident but relaxed. He lets washes pool and blur in the foreground where the sand and water mix, then tightens up around the boats and figures. The result is a scene that feels both observed and designed: a real place, shaped by a painter who knows how to balance strong shapes with fleeting detail. The watercolor offers a quiet portrait of community life by the sea, not romanticized, but seen with affection and a clear eye.

Beached Fishing Boats on Mediterranean Shore Coastal Watercolour by Pierre Neveu
By Pierre Neveu
Located in Cirencester, Gloucestershire
Title: Beached Fishing Boats on Mediterranean Shore Coastal Watercolour by Pierre Neveu
Artist: Pierre Neveu (French b.1929)
Medium: Watercolour on artists paper, unframed
Size (H x W): 8.75 x 6 inches
Condition: good overall; clean surface and bright palette with minimal handling marks.
Provenance: From the artist’s studio sale in France; all works by this artist in our collection originate from the artist’s estate.
Description: In this exquisite Mediterranean harbour scene, Pierre Neveu captures a row of fishing boats resting on the sun-bleached shore — their hulls painted in vivid blues, yellows, and reds, glowing against the white sand and turquoise sea beyond. The composition balances stillness and vitality: the boats lie quietly in the midday heat, yet every line and shadow suggests movement, texture, and light.
Neveu’s masterful handling of watercolour transparency lends the work its distinctive luminosity. Cool washes of aquamarine and indigo melt into warm ochres and siennas, evoking the sharp coastal light of the French Riviera or southern Italy. The artist’s loose, confident brushstrokes and layered perspective show both precision and spontaneity — hallmarks of his plein-air approach.
The painting embodies Neveu’s fascination with everyday maritime life, transforming the humble working boats of the Mediterranean into studies of rhythm, geometry, and colour harmony. There is an intimacy here — a sense of the artist pausing mid-journey, quietly observing the relationship between land, sea, and human craft.
This is a quintessential Neveu composition: joyful yet restrained, rooted in observation yet lifted by artistic freedom. A perfect choice for collectors of vintage coastal paintings...
