About the Item
French 1960's gouache and watercolour view of a Provencale bastide, its surrounding farm, countryside and fields of poppies, by J P George. Signed and Dated bottom right.
A super charming and colourful scene of French rural life. George has painted in a naive way reminiscent of folk art. It is in the style of his contemporary Yves Brayer who captured the countryside and rural scenes, such as this, in his beloved South of France. The touches of colour throughout representing the fields of poppies, the roof tops and the tractor move the eye through the composition. The Cyprus and other trees also give a rhythm to the scene enhanced by the charming animals, sheep, sheep dog, horse and of course the shepherd or 'berger'.
Monet was also fascinated by the colour of poppies in the landscape and used them in his compositions of the 1880's

A fresh and charming view of trees in a landscape. Decaux has used simple, fluid but strong strokes for this composition. One can feel the influence of 'abstraction of form' that was a part of his later work. The eye is drawn from the trees to the surrounding fields, the touches of colour to the right and then to the silhouette of the hills beyond. The use of watercolour at its best.
