Description:
A serene original watercolour painting by the 20th-century French Impressionist artist, Maurice Mazeilie. This painting depicts a peaceful bay or rural dock, with an entrance visible near the horizon where the land meets the sky. Several sailboats rest on the water, gently swaying in the wind under a bright sky. Expressive pencil and pen marks bring energy and structure to the scene, while the bold strokes and harmonious color palette of deep blues, warm browns, and soft greys beautifully convey the calm yet lively atmosphere of the bay.
Maurice Mazeilie (French, 1924 - 2021):
Mazeilie lived and worked in Montmartre, where he had a studio on the famous Place du Tertre. Place du Tertre, located just a stone’s throw away from the Basilica of Sacré-Cœur, is known for its vibrant community of artists and is considered one of the key locations in Montmartre's artistic history. Since the late 19th century, Montmartre has been a haven for artists, housing greats like Picasso and Modigliani, and providing inspiration with its scenic streets and bustling cafés.

Historical Significance: Place du Tertre became known as an artist's hub during the Belle Époque era, with painters such as Toulouse-Lautrec, Renoir, and Degas frequenting the area. By the 20th century, it became synonymous with art and creativity.
Artist Colony: The square remains one of the few places in Paris where artists can publicly display and sell their works directly to tourists and collectors, keeping the artistic tradition alive.
