About the Item
Pen drawing, pencil and sanguine elevations on paper.
The subject echoes Annibale Carracci's frescoes at the Palazzo Farnese in Rome (1597-1607), specifically the episode in which Hermes delivers the "apple of discord" to Paris chosen to decide who will be the most beautiful among the goddesses Aphrodite, Hera and Athena.
From the cycle was taken a series of 44 etchings engraved by Carlo Cesio and published in 1657 by Francois Collignon.
This specifically could be gleaned from a study through the second half of the 17th century engraving by Pietro dall'Aquila as seems inferable from the neck of the dog and the shape of the tree behind it.
Note the presence of the fig leaf covering Hermes' nudity, which does not appear in either the frescoes or the carvings. The style of the stroke and a certain resemblance of the face to ancient statuary make the sheet fit into the neoclassicist current.
