About the Item

Armand Rassenfosse (Liège, 1862 – 1934) Half-length Nude Woman Arranging Her Hair, 1906 Graphite on paper 60.5 x 40 cm Unsigned, dated lower right: 1906 Provenance: Private collection Armand Rassenfosse was one of the major figures of the Belgian art scene at the turn of the 20th century. Born in Liège, he developed an early interest in graphic arts and in the depiction of the female form, which he explored through various techniques, notably engraving, lithography, and pencil drawing, as seen here. A friend and collaborator of the great Félicien Rops, whose influence is sometimes felt in his intimate and sensual subjects, Rassenfosse nevertheless distinguished himself through a gentler approach, imbued with a kind of melancholic lyricism. The present drawing, dated 1906, is characteristic of the artist’s mature period, during which he achieved remarkable mastery of form and line. The female figure, shown half-length, is captured in the privacy of her toilette, arms raised as she arranges her long hair with silent grace. Her lowered gaze and serene expression suggest a moment of quiet introspection, almost meditative. The background, barely sketched, reveals a few perfume bottles atop a vanity, reinforcing the intimate atmosphere of the scene. The graphite technique, employed here with great delicacy, allows Rassenfosse to subtly modulate the shadows and evoke the texture of skin with extraordinary refinement. The contrast between the finished areas — particularly the face and torso — and those left as mere outlines reflects a modern graphic sensibility, anticipating the more minimalist tendencies of 20th-century art. In this work, Rassenfosse successfully combines sensuality and modesty, realism and suggestion. It reflects the period's growing interest in the feminine world, no longer idealized to excess, but captured in its everyday truth. This drawing thus belongs to the Belgian Symbolist tradition while also heralding, through its delicacy and spontaneity, the concerns of modern art. We thank Mr. Thomas Deprez for suggesting this attribution.
