About the Item
Chaim Gross (Austrian, 1904 - 1991) was one of America’s foremost sculptors and a leading advocate of direct carving in wood. Born in Austrian Galicia, he immigrated to New York in 1921, where he studied at the Educational Alliance and the Art Students League. Gross developed a distinct style characterized by rhythmic, totemic figures carved in hard woods, later expanding into bronze and Judaic themes after World War II. His sculptures, drawings, and watercolors express a deep joy and reverence for life, echoing his Hasidic roots. We present an original watercolor, Nude in Repose, whose curving, expressive brushwork reveals the sculptor’s sensitivity to form and movement.
