Double-sided sketch for the "Sala delle Cariatidi" of the Royal Palace in Milan.
The vibrant and intense brown ink sketch of these two female figures, executed by the Parma plasticist Gaetano Callani, is an open window on the equally dynamic and changing events that serve as the background to the artistic commission on which this sheet depends: the sculptural decoration for the lower order of the great Salone of the palace of the new Habsburg court, later known as the Sala delle Cariatidi in the Palazzo Reale in Milan. [...] he designed and modeled forty anthropomorphic plaster supports: twenty telamons and twenty caryatids to support the balustrade that ran all around the walls of the hall. larval today (of the Hall of the Caryatids) is tragically the result of the bombings that fell on Milan on August 15, 1943, during World War II, also involving the east wing of the Royal Palace and the Hall of the Caryatids. Work to secure and preserve the Royal Palace was unfortunately procrastinated until 1947
leading to a worsening of the conservation condition of ephemeral and organic materials such as wood, stucco and textiles.
