About the Item

A Fine, 1950s Mid-Century Modern Academic Anatomical Figure Study of a Model's Hand Feet by Notable Chicago Artist, Harold Haydon (Am. 1909-1994). A well executed composite figure study highlighting Haydon's refined skill and confident draftsmanship as an artist. One from a series of related studio figure studies by Haydon available from our other gallery 1st Dibs listings. Artwork size: 9 1/4 x 11 1/2 inches (sheet), unframed, archivally floated to an 11 x 14 inch mat board (ready to frame). Signed with artists initials and dated "HH 24-V-50" lower right. Estate stamped on reverse. Provenance: Estate of the artist. Artwork is completed on hand-made, heavy gray toned paper, stamped with "Art Knows No Barriers" on the reverse (see photos). Harold Emerson Haydon was born in 1909 in Fort William, Ontario, Canada. He moved to America in 1917, settling with his family in Chicago, Illinois and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1941. Haydon attended the University of Chicago Lab School and then the University of Chicago, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in Philosophy. He also studied at the Art Institute of Chicago in the early 1930s. Haydon became a Professor of Art at the University of Chicago from 1944-1975 and later taught as an instructor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago from 1975-1981. From 1975-1982, Haydon also taught as an Adjunct Professor of Fine Arts at Indiana University. He is recognized for his vibrant, painterly landscapes of New England, Vermont and Canada, as well as his dynamic urban views of the city of Chicago and its picturesque lakefront. Harold Haydon served as the longtime, respected art critic of the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper from 1963-1985. He died in Chicago in 1994.
