About the Item

A Fine, Mid-Century Modern 1950s Academic Anatomical Figure Study of Female Feet by Notable Chicago Artist, Harold Haydon (Am. 1909-1994). A well executed ink composite figure study of two feet, highlighting Haydon's refined skill and confident draftsmanship. One from a series of related highly finished studio figure studies by Haydon available from our other gallery listings. Artwork size: 10 1/2" x 8” (sheet), unframed, archivally matted to 16" x 12" (ready to frame). Signed and dated "Harold Haydon 19-IV-50" lower center. Estate stamped on reverse. Provenance: Estate of the artist. Harold Emerson Haydon was born in 1909 in Fort William, Ontario, Canada. He moved to Chicago with his family in 1917 and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1941. Haydon attended the University of Chicago Lab School and the University of Chicago, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in Philosophy. He also studied at the Art Institute of Chicago in the early 1930s. Haydon became a Professor of Art at the University of Chicago from 1944-1975 and later taught as an instructor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago from 1975-1981. From 1975-1982, Haydon also taught as an Adjunct Professor of Fine Arts at Indiana University. He is recognized for his vibrant, painterly landscapes of New England, Vermont and Canada, as well as his dynamic urban views of the city of Chicago and its picturesque lakefront. Harold Haydon served as the longtime, respected art critic of the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper from 1963-1985. He died in Chicago in 1994.
