Condition: Some minor handling creases to sheet and light toning at edges. In otherwise very good condition
Notes:
Provenance: private collection - Boston, MA. It is also illegibly pencil inscribed lower right; possibly the original title or the model's name.
Biography:
Hendrik Paulides was a Dutch painter and draughtsman born in Utrecht, the Netherlands in 1892. He was a student of the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. He is most known for his artworks depicting South East Asian natives and their culture within the Dutch East Indies, then still a colonial possession of the Netherlands. Paulides traveled to Indonesia twice, first in 1922 and later in 1929. He would also visit Java and Bali during his second trip. These destinations, along with the Art Deco movement, would serve as his most important sources of artistic inspiration throughout his career. He would later create murals for the Paris World Fair in 1937. Paulides later died in Amsterdam in 1967.
