Provenance: From the Michael Appleby of St James’s, London collection. Jean Croizier was a successful French artist, known especially for his miniatures and figure studies. He worked in watercolor, chalks and drawings on paper. He was born in Marseille, in the Bouches du Rhône region of France, the son of Georges Croizier, a merchant in Lunéville, and his third wife, Marie Jean Hallé. In 1811 Jean Croizier entered the Ecole de l’ Académie in Paris to commence his formal artistic training, which was continued when he became a pupil of Pierre-Paul Prud’hon, and Louis-Francois Aubry. This extensive French academic training was at a time when life drawings, nude studies and classical form were central to artistic education. This training would have emphasised the anatomical accuracy which became central to his artistic success. In 1815 Croizier worked in Strasbourg and in 1820 and 1821 he worked in Tours and Marseille. He is also known to have worked in London, and in Paris, where he lived at 37 Rue Neuve-Saint-Roch. Whilst in Paris he made a living by taking commissions to paint miniatures of various noble and famous people. Croizier is considered to have been at the peak of his artistic career between around 1812 to 1827. Between these years he exhibited some of his works at the Paris Salon, and in 1825 he exhibited at the Royal Academy in London six times. Croizier’s success can be attributed to his technical skill and sensitivity to light and form. His career coincided with the post-Revolutionary and Napoleonic era, when classical ideals and academic training dominated the French art world. His work sits well within the broader context of early 19th century Romantic and Neoclassical art. Today Croizier’s work appears in some institutional collections, including the Musée de Orléans. The British Museum also have examples of his drawings from between 1817 and 1825. This attests to the recognition and circulation of his works. Works by this artist are relatively rare on the open market, but contribute to our understanding of life-drawing practice in early 19th-century France. Croizier’s works are valued for their rarity and as examples of the refined draughtsmanship and academic training that shaped artistic practice in France during the early nineteenth century. © Big Sky Fine Art This original watercolor and chalk painting on paper is a rare work by the French artist Jean Croizier (flourished 1812–1827). Dated 1819 and signed by the artist in the lower left section, the artwork depicts a standing female nude rendered with remarkable anatomical precision and sensitivity to light and shadow. Croizier’s masterful use of white chalk highlights the sculptural qualities of the figure, while the subtle watercolor washes add warmth and depth to the composition. This early 19th-century French artwork shows a standing female nude in a classical contrapposto pose. The pose is “classical” in the sense that it directly echoes Greco-Roman statuary traditions. Contrapposto (Italian for “counterpose”) refers to the stance where the weight is shifted onto one leg (here the left leg), creating a naturalistic tilt in the hips and shoulders. The arms are extended, one slightly forward and one lower to the side, giving a sense of grace and balance, while also guiding the viewer’s eye along the body. The head turns away from the body, adding an elegant twist, another hallmark of classical figural studies. In French academic art of the early 1800s, this type of nude study was often called a “pose académique” or “académie”—a standard exercise in the École des Beaux-Arts, modelled on antique sculpture and live models. The model in this work is known to have also appeared in works by the French Neo-Classical artist Pierre-Paul Prud’hon, of whom Crozier was at one time a pupil. This 1819 signed nude study is an outstanding example of Croizier’s skill in balancing classical form with a sense of movement and emotion. An evocative and timeless work, this piece offers collectors and admirers of early 19th-century French art, academic figure studies, and neoclassical nude drawings a rare opportunity to acquire an authentic signed and dated example from Croizier’s oeuvre.

Frame size 28.3 inches x 18.7 inches ( 72cm x 47.5cm ). Available for sale; this academic life drawing of a male nude is by the French artist Henry Arthur Roberts and dates from the early 1840s. The drawing is presented and supplied in a modest hand painted glazed wooden frame dating from the mid-20th century (which is shown in these photographs). This antique drawing is in good condition, commensurate with its age. It is in an untouched condition having never been restored. The paper has handling marks, some light surface dirt, the odd foxing mark and general age toning. The overall patina adds to the aesthetic and is supplied ready to hang and display. The drawing is not signed but came from a portfolio of drawings by Henry Arthur Roberts. Henry Arthur Roberts was a recognised French artist, notable for his portraits and paintings of religious subjects. Born in Paris in 1819, he was the son of British watercolour artist James Roberts, himself active in Paris from 1819 -1846. Henry became a student of his father. Henry Roberts’s talent as a young man was such that he was accepted as a student of Michel Martin Drölling and worked extensively with him. Drölling, the highly acclaimed neoclassic artist (1786-1851) was noted for his theatrical paintings of history and grand portraits. He produced many notable works, including a ceiling work for the Louvre, and works in the Palace of Versailles. Roberts would have studied with Drölling at an early stage in his career, as Drölling died when Roberts was 32. Learning with such a master would have had a huge impact on Roberts in terms of his academic skills and his own emerging style. Roberts exhibited at the Salon de Paris from 1839, when he was only 20 years old, right through to 1867. His work in the Universal Exhibition of 1855 won him a Third Class Medal. He became Vice-President of the Association of Artists in Paris and in July 1898 he was elevated to the rank of Knight of the Legion of Honour with a foreign title. This was the highest state honour available to him, in recognition of his status as an artist. Henry Roberts died in 1900, but his legacy lives on, with works in many famous public collections, including the Musée Carnavalet, the Musée du Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay, Musée des Beaux-Arts, Orsay, and in Boston, USA. © Big Sky Fine Art This exceptional academic nude...
