Henri-Lucien Doucet (1856-1895) An allegory, Pencil on thin paper 37 x 19 cm Trace of the Lucien Doucet Estate Sale of 1890 Stamp on the lower right (very faded) In quite good condition, yellowed by time Provenance: Lucien Doucet Estate Sale of 1890 Georges-Antoine Rochegrosse collection And by inheritance to the former owner In a modern mount with window 53 x 40,5 cm Henri-Lucien Doucet (born August 23, 1856 in Paris & died December 31, 1895 in Paris) was a painter of genre & history, portrait painter, watercolorist, pastellist & illustrator. Lucien Doucet entered the Académie Julian at the age of 18 in 1874, under the direction of the painter Jules Lefèbvre. There he obtained 5 bronze medals . He was then admitted to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he was a pupil of J. Lefebvre & Gustave Boulanger. In 1877 at the Ecole des beaux-arts Lucien Doucet obtained 5 silver medals . He made his debut at the 1877 Salon in Paris when he was twenty-one. Then, he interrupted his training in 1877 to work in the United States. He lived in Madison avenue in New York. His work " A page in the 13th century " appeared that year at the exhibition of the National Academy of Design in New York. The following year, “ Tête de fille ” marked its last New York event. Following this stay, the subjects in Doucet's work bear witness to his attachment to the New World. Lucien Doucet's early works show the influence of Jules Bastien-Lepage(1848-1884), a painter who had a notable influence on the art world in the 1880s. He sent to the Salon of 1878 a painting entitled " Atala ". In 1878 Lucien Doucet obtained 2 other medals and the 1st second Grand Prix of Rome with the subject " The death of Demosthenes ". In 1879 he obtained 2 more medals and a 1st third class medal at the "Prix du Salon". He exhibited at this salon the " Portrait of Miss Guillemette F. " (as well as at the 1880 salon), that of " Mlle Yvonne L. " as well as that of " Count Robert de Montesquiou Fézensac ". In August 1880 the "gazette des femmes" postponed Lucien Doucet's affair with Lola de Ruiz of Philadelphia: they got to know and noticed each other in the studio of their common master, Jules Lefebvre at the Julian academy (see " Artistic relations- Literature and the visual arts in nineteenth-Century France "). That same year, he won the Grand Prix de Rome with his painting “ Recognition of Ulysses and Telemachus ”. He stayed from 1880 to 1884 at the Villa Medici in Rome. During this stay he obtained the gold medal in exhibitions in Rouen and Munich . Lola having joined him in Rome, they had a secret Catholic wedding on February 13, 1881 in Rome, then a civil marriage still in Rome on January 3, 1883. In Venice, he found his friend the painter Georges Rochegrosse and, in his company, visited part of the glorious peninsula. The annotations are by the hand of the Rochegrosse artworks expert. But an other specialist of the artist suggests it should have more probably been used for an illustration of José Maria de Heredia "Les Trophées...
