The drawing depicts a young man sitting with the
hand on forehead. the position is probably meant to express the feeling of regret, or sadness.
In the academic preparation of painters, drawing various emotional states was a frequent exercise. In our case, since this is the painter who worked extensively in the area of wall paintings of religious buildings, it is a preparatory study for a male figure. These figures of classical and academic flavor were then included in large fresco compositions with biblical subjects, or in the compositions of altarpieces.
Coming from the bequest of the Turin artist Luigi Guglielmino.
The collection of sketches and preparatory drawings mainly included works by his master, Enrico Reffo (Turin, 1831-1917), one of the greatest representatives of Italian religious painting in the second half of the 19th century.
High-quality drawing, showing the continuity of the Italian and French school of academic drawing, which continued to live on in Reffo's studio in Turin.
