About the Item
This striking early drawing by Zalce captures a young man at a moment of heightened emotion, his mouth open and brow furrowed in what reads as shock and defiance. Executed in 1936, at the height of Zalce’s involvement with post-Revolutionary artistic circles, the work demonstrates his command of line and dramatic chiaroscuro.
Zalce’s art was deeply invested in the human condition, often depicting ordinary men and women with a raw honesty that aligned with the broader Mexican muralist movement. Here, the intense psychological expression anticipates themes of struggle and resilience that would define much of his mature output.
Around the time that he produced this drawing, Zalce was working with Leopoldo Méndez, Pablo O'Higgins and Fernando Gamboa on the mural “Workers against the War and Fascism” on the stairwell at the Talleres Gráficos de la Nación in the center of Mexico City.
This work is charcoal on paper and is signed and dated in the lower left. It is matted and framed behind anti-reflective UV acrylic.

About the artist:
Alfredo Zalce Torres (1908-2003) was a Mexican artist and contemporary of Diego Rivera, David Siqueiros and other muralists. He worked principally as a painter, sculptor, and engraver, also taught, and was involved in the foundation of a number of institutions of culture and education. He is perhaps best known for his mural painting, typically imbued with "fervent social criticism". He is acclaimed as the first artist to borrow the traditional material of coloured cement as the medium for a "modern work of art". Publicity-shy, he is said to have turned down Mexico's Premio Nacional de Ciencias y Artes before finally accepting it in 2001. Before his death, Sotheby's described him as "the most important living Mexican artist up to date".

James Stroudley was born in London on 17 June 1906, the son of James Stroudley, showcard and ticket writer. He studied at Clapham School of Art (1923-27) and then at the Royal College of Art (1927-30), where his teachers included Alan Gwynne-Jones and William Rothenstein. As a recipient of the first Abbey Scholarship he was able to spend three years in Italy from 1930, where he absorbed the influences of Giotto and Piero della Francesca, and produced one of the last wholly satisfying decorative cycles by a Rome Scholar of the period. From 1934, he exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists, and was elected to its membership in the following year.
From the Second World War – in which he worked with the Camouflage Unit – Stroudley taught at St Martin’s School of Art and was a visiting lecturer at the Royal Academy Schools. Though he continued to live in London, his later work, exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1955, indicated regular painting trips to Kent and Sussex coasts.
