About the Item

Untitled (DeBeers), Late 20th Century
Mixed media on artist board
19 3/4 x 15 in.
This illustration shows a woman wearing a sparkling diamond wedding ring, framed within a television-shaped space and split into two sections. The two sections could be displaying a perceived "glitch" in the screen. The text on the left hand side reads "A Diamond is Forever. De Beers"; De Beers was founded in 1888 and had a monopoly on rough diamond distribution from its inception through the early 20th century, claiming 80-85% of the market and becoming wildly popular in pop culture. The company now controls about 30% of the market. They are credited with the marketing campaign that gave the diamond all of the significance it has today - making it a symbol of love and commitment.
Bernard Nacion is a creative whose imaginative compositions take many different shapes. He guest starred on the Los Angeles Public-access television show "Let's Paint", which was started in 2002 by John Kilduff. He also worked in the art department for films including The House of Yes (1997) and A Dangerous Woman (1993). His subjects range from surrealist scenes to portraits and cartoon-styled animations.
