Sul cartoncino applicato nella cornice è riportata l'annotazione, a penna e in grafia Kurrent, "Urgroßvater Ludwig Fr(ei)h(e)r(r) von Keller" "Urgroßmutter Fr(ei)h(e)r(rin) von Keller geb(oren) von Niebecker", ovvero il riferimento agli effigiati, riconoscibili quindi in Ludwig Friedrich Heinrich Ferdinand barone di Keller (1760-1835), un politico tedesco chhe fu direttore del distretto prussiano, e sua moglie Auguste Johanne Henriette baronessa di Niebecker (1760-1832). Considerato l'appellativo "bisnonno" e "bisnonna" prima del nome, è lecito che fosse scritta dal loro discendente diretto, presumibilmente alla fine del XIX secolo.
La provenienza altolocata viene comunque mitigata da una certa freschezza e naturalezza dei due coniugi, ritratti in una posa fiera ma con un sorriso non nascosto, in abiti eleganti la cui materialità è quasi palpabile.
I due dipinti possono essere attribuiti all'importante artista americano John Singleton Copley.
Somiglianze sono infatti riscontrabili sia nella tecnica, Copley prediligeva l'uso dei pastelli, che nei toni, nello specifico quella gradazione di azzurro che si ritrova anche nei vestiti delle dame delle famiglie Gore, Royal e in quello di Mrs Turner. La posa di tre quarti della baronessa riprende quella di Mrs Daniel Denison Rogers Abigail Bromfield (che indossa anche una parrucca simile) e del Cavaliere della Croce Rossa.
Considerata la maturità stilistica e l'età degli effigiati, si può presumere una datazione al primissimo XIX secolo.
