Artist Biography: Marco Silombria
Italian Pop Art artist Marco Silombria (Savona, 1936 - Albissola, 2017) was a respected and esteemed painter, sculptor, ceramist, and advertising graphic designer, active in Turin from the late 1960s.
Silombria’s artistic journey began in the 1950s when he studied under Emilio Scanavino, one of Italy’s influential modern artists. He later collaborated with Armando Testa in Turin, creating advertising campaigns for major brands like Fiat, Facis, Superga, and Defonseca from the 1970s to the 1990s. His advertising work is recognized for its strong Pop imprint, effectively merging artistic creativity with commercial appeal.
As one of the founders of the CGSS agency, along with notable advertisers such as Silvio Saffirio, Gagliardi, and Giorgio Caponetti, Silombria signed several successful campaigns, including those for Gallo Rice and the Fiat 127, and designed posters for the Gruppo Finanziario Tessile. His work in advertising showcased his ability to blend artistry with market demands, earning him a reputation in both the art and business communities.
In the 1980s, Silombria transitioned to painting, dedicating himself to openly and decidedly homoerotic art. His works during this period reflect a blend of new Dadaism and Pop Art, often exploring themes of beauty, athleticism, and sexuality. Silombria’s admiration for the male form is evident, as he sought to reinterpret classical motifs and celebrate the aesthetics of the human body in his art.
Always an active advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, Silombria was the “creative mind” behind the first Italian homosexual association, Fuori!, which aimed to promote visibility and rights for the gay community. He was among the first to introduce male nudes in a pop-Dada context to Italy, challenging societal norms and pushing the boundaries of artistic expression.
As a ceramist, Silombria also drew inspiration from Greek mythology and classical culture, further emphasizing his admiration for the statuary male body. His multifaceted contributions to the arts and activism have left a lasting impact on Italian culture and continue to resonate with contemporary audiences.
