About the Item
Meir Gur Arieh (1891-1951) studied in Bezalel from 1909-1911. He was a teacher of painting and ivory carving from 1911-1929. In 1923 he established, with Raban, the "Studio for Industrial Art". His works are in the Israel Museum collection.
Gur Meir Aryeh was one of the leading artists of the Bezalel school. The teachers of Bezalel developed a distinctive school of art, known as the Bezalel school, which portrayed Biblical and Zionist subjects in a style influenced by the European jugendstil (art nouveau) and traditional Persian and Syrian art. In this etching, the artist Meir Gur Arie renders the portrait of a Rabbi seen from a profile view. The depiction is realistic, with a sense of naturalistic proportions, and by cross-hatching enhances the volume of the figure.
