About the Item

Academic Study of the Roman Bust, Tuscan School, 44 × 34 cm Mid-19th century Pencil on paper Academic study of a Roman bust, drawn in pencil with a balanced sense of form and light. The composition builds the structure of the model through even hatching and a soft luminosity that enhances the relief. The work reflects Tuscan academic training and a refined interest in classical sculpture. In the 19th century, it was common practice in art academies to copy plaster casts of ancient works. Such exercises formed an essential part of artistic education, helping students to understand proportion and modelling. This sheet documents that practice and the enduring study of classical art in the mid-19th century. From one of two portfolios of drawings discovered in an old Tuscan property, bringing together academic exercises and copies made between the 18th century and the first quarter of the 20th century. Paper with a fine surface and light traces of studio use.
