About the Item

Framed: 21 1/4 x 17 1/2 inches Azaleas is a graceful and subdued composition featuring soft pink, yellow, and green tones. Framed in a custom designed modernist frame 23 karat silvered leaf with glass. Hills was a master of capturing the essence of whatever flowers or vase she chose for her composition and hinting at the elegance of detail without overworking the pastel. In addition, what is unique about her depiction of the flowers is the artist’s capacity to grasp the subtle nuances of “gesture” as the flowers naturally appear in the vase. Capturing these qualities on paper required a sureness of touch and mastery of technique that was her hallmark and there seems to be no artificial rearranging of the shapes and inclination of the flowers. An editorial in the November 23, 1939 Boston Herald stated: “Somehow she manages to bring dancing sunlight and vibrant atmosphere within the four walls and to soak her flowers in it. One artist has said that New England and the United States has never produced her equal.” Indeed, Laura Coombs Hills was one of this country’s most sought-after flower artists. So well-known is Laura Hills for her flower “portraiture” we must not forget her very highly regarded miniature painting, which was the basis of her renown in the first place. She was one of the leading painters of portrait miniatures on ivory during that medium's revival period. From 1890- 1933, she painted 369 miniatures on ivory and established her reputation as one of the finest miniaturists in America. Beginning in the mid-1920's, when Laura Hills' eyesight began to deteriorate and the demand for miniatures waned, she devoted all of her time to rendering the flowers that she adored. These were shown in Boston from the 1930s and she continued to exhibit them in Boston and New York until 1940, when she was over eighty years old. Purple and White Iris
Located in New York, NY
Fannie Burr was a highly accomplished painter and one of our earlier American women artists! This very contemporary, fresh and appealing floral study was done circa 1895!! The rarity of this and its virtuoso execution could lend it to being in the collection of a Connecticut museum. Along with her sister Jennie, they were known as the "Burr Sisters". They did focus on paintings of still life and nature which would have been acceptable for a female artist of the period. Fannie studied at the Yale School of Art and then the Art Students League in New York. She was assistant to Julian Alden Weir a major CT impressionist, while he was at Yale teaching. The composition is avant-hard for this date! It is in an exceptional hand carved 22 karat frame of high value, Art Nouveau style. In the estate of 700 or so paintings by Fannie and Jenny Burr it was found that they did not sign most of the paintings. They were not selling their works or represented so much so this is understandable. This has a great provenance! Estate of the artist Julian Eddy by 1962 Connecticut Gallery, Lyme CT...
