Modern Drawings and Watercolor Paintings
MODERN STYLE
The first decades of the 20th century were a period of artistic upheaval, with modern art movements including Cubism, Surrealism, Futurism and Dadaism questioning centuries of traditional views of what art should be. Using abstraction, experimental forms and interdisciplinary techniques, painters, sculptors, photographers, printmakers and performance artists all pushed the boundaries of creative expression.
Major exhibitions, like the 1913 Armory Show in New York City — also known as the “International Exhibition of Modern Art,” in which works like the radically angular Nude Descending a Staircase by Marcel Duchamp caused a sensation — challenged the perspective of viewers and critics and heralded the arrival of modern art in the United States. But the movement’s revolutionary spirit took shape in the 19th century.
The Industrial Revolution, which ushered in new technology and cultural conditions across the world, transformed art from something mostly commissioned by the wealthy or the church to work that responded to personal experiences. The Impressionist style emerged in 1860s France with artists like Claude Monet, Paul Cézanne and Edgar Degas quickly painting works that captured moments of light and urban life. Around the same time in England, the Pre-Raphaelites, like Edward Burne-Jones and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, borrowed from late medieval and early Renaissance art to imbue their art with symbolism and modern ideas of beauty.
Emerging from this disruption of the artistic status quo, modern art went further in rejecting conventions and embracing innovation. The bold legacy of leading modern artists Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo, Salvador Dalí, Henri Matisse, Joan Miró, Marc Chagall, Piet Mondrian and many others continues to inform visual culture today.

This artwork "Untitled #2" c.1970 is a colors pastel and crayon on thick paper by American artist Jerry Opper, 1924-2014. It is hand signed with initial in pencil at the lower right corner by the artist. The image size is 23 x 18 inches, sheet size is 24 x 19 inches. It is in excellent condition, there are pastel marks on the margin all around the artwork and also on the back, see picture #1.
About the artist:
Jerry Opper was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on September 5, 1924. He moved to Los Angeles with his family in 1933. After graduating from Hollywood High School, he worked in movie studios and attended art classes at Chouinard Art Institute. In May 1942, Opper was drafted into the army and was then able to study at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center while his outfit was stationed in Colorado. Later he was sent to Guam and was discharged in December 1945.
Opper returned to Chouinard and his work in movie studios until 1947, when he moved to San Francisco. He enrolled as a full-time student at the California School of Fine Arts (now SFAI) and received his diploma in June of 1950. In 1948, Opper met his wife Gertrud Ruth Friedmann, daughter of artist Gustav Friedmann, whose works are also in the Lost Art Salon collection. It was love at first sight and a few weeks after their first encounter at the Black Cat in San Francisco's North Beach, they got married and enjoyed a passionate, life-long romance.
Shortly after he finished school, Opper worked briefly as a decorator’s assistant and then started his career as a commercial artist, working for several firms such as Fibreboard, Beatrix Food and Precision. Working full-time and dedicating himself to having a rich family life occupied most of Opper's time, but he continued to be creative. He was above all a family man with the pride of having raised two exceptional daughters, Erika and Jody. Year after year, Opper would painstakingly craft their Halloween costumes...

Beautiful and fresh painting depicting christ in prayer. The figure is luminous and the background completely blue. The color gives a great brightness to the whole painting. The figure of Christ is kneeling and wearing a very bright white toga.
This work has been realized by the French artist Antoine Bourdelle (Montabaun, 1861 - 1929). Born Émile Antoine Bordelles, he was an influential and prolific French sculptor and teacher. He was a student of Auguste Rodin, a teacher of Giacometti and Henri Matisse, and an important figure in the Art Deco movement and the transition from the Beaux-Arts style to modern sculpture. His studio became the Musée Bourdelle, an art museum dedicated to his work. In 1885, he moved into the studio on 16, impasse du Maine - which is now the museum. That same year, his paster cast of La Première victoire d'Hannibal (The First Victory of Hannibal) won a medal at the Salon of French Artists. In 1900, Bourdelle decorated the theatre of the Grevin Museum. The work of Ursula Schneider include pastel drawings, paintings, small-scale sculptural paintings and woodcuts, working on one medium at a time. These processes complement and enrich each other by stimulating a fresh approach and allowing for experimentation. Drawing from observation in the landscape has been the basis for the work.
She attended Kunstgewerbeschule in Zurich and Keramische Fachschule in Bern and holds an Undergraduate Degree in Ceramics from Switzerland.
In 1968 she moved to the United States and graduated in 1972 with an MFA in Painting from the San Francisco Art Institute.
She lived and worked in New York from 1980-2004 and taught painting at the San Francisco Art Institute, Cooper Union and Sarah Lawrence College.

Pierre Andrieu (1821-1892) was a pupil of the famous painter Eugène Delacroix from 1844 and his colleague until 1863. He worked with him at the town hall of Paris, at the Senate, at the Chamber of Deputies, at the Angels Chapel at the Saint-Sulpice Church, and they restored the ceiling of the Apollo Gallery at the Louvre. In 1868, he restored the paintings at the Senate library realized by Delacroix ruined by infiltrations. In 1871, he opened his art studio and realized copies of Delacroix’s artworks, original paintings with genre scenes and animals (one is currently at the National Gallery in London) and a great number of orientalist drawings...
